This site reports within a single web portal some of the main results of the project "Real- and quasi real-time ground motion estimates of significant earthquakes in the Italian region" funded by the Italian Civil Protection for the years 2005-2007 (DPC-S4).
The data used in these analysis all come from the Italian National Seismic Network (IV) and the Mediterranenan Network (MedNet, MN). They consists mainly of broadband (BB) waveforms. The data are transmitted to the Rome INGV headquarters in various ways (e.g., satellite, digital phone lines, internet , ..) Currently there are more than 120 BB stations operating in Italy. Acceleration data are used in the generation of the ground motion maps when available.
The project involves, among other products directly related to the monitoring in the INGV seismic center, the following:
- the quick determination of the Moment Tensor using the "Time Domain Moment Tensor" (TDMT) technique developed at U.C. Berkeley (Dreger and Helmberger,1993; Dreger, 2003; see http://seismo.berkeley.edu/~dreger/mtindex.html) and adopted by the California Integrated Seismic Network.
- QRCMT are Quick Regional Centroid Moment Tensors, seismic moment tensors computed using the CMT algorithm modified to invert for intermediate period surface waves (Ardvisson and Ekstr"om, BSSA, 1998) recorded at regional distance. More information are at MedNet.
- the estimation of the ground motion shaking using the USGS-ShakeMap procedure (Wald et al., 1999; see http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/shakemap/background.php) and adapted to earthquakes occurring in Italy and surrounding areas. The maps are published for M>= 3.0.
- the distribution of the waveform data as event bundle of SAC format files and Shape file accessible from the single event pages.
